Rates
Rather than operating on a strict structure of counting words or pages, our rates are negotiable and based off of a rounded-down estimate of how much time we predict your project will take to complete.
For simple transparency and to give a rough idea, the total cost for a five-page proofreading project might only come to $20. However, five pages of copy-editing could come to $50. A five-page professional document that needs multiple passes of copy-editing, formatting, and research, or re-writing might come to $150.
Language development and content rewriting, referenced here as “substantive editing”, are both available at roughly $35 per hour. High-level consultation services are flexible and project-dependent.
Whether you’re a corporation coming to us with a large project or a small business looking for advice, there will never be any hidden fees or post-agreement quote changes.

What type of work is needed?
Let’s clarify the differences between copy-editing, substantive editing, and consulting.
Copy-Editing
Copy-editing is the editing standard. This will include proof-reading, formatting, message flow and pacing, consistency, clarity, and all of the technical detail you would expect. This does not include subject research or fact-check sleuthing.
Copy-editing makes your work nicer to read, easier to understand, and grammatically correct.
Substantive Editing
This high level of editing involves working with the client on the fundamental aspects of the project. This can include overall layout, the general message, approach, research, fact-checking, population psychology consideration, and more.
Substantive Editing helps with the actual substance of the project, and it is generally more involved.
Consulting
Consultation services collaboratively deliberate the objective of the work and the environment in which it will be presented. Alternative approaches may be identified, and possible disruptions can be planned for. This directs or supplements strategy.
Consulting supports the creation or recovery of your overall concept, work plan, and execution.

We know — scepticism is the appropriate response to this statement. Why would we operate this way? The answer is simple is that we want to and we’re able to. We have no desire nor need to gouge our clients to maximize our profits when we can instead focus on quality and care while enjoying what we do. We charge just as much as we need to, and not a smidge more.
Gilded Quill Communications is an editing company based in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. With no costly physical location to speak of, our prices stay at a minimum for the benefit of the clients.

Editor’s Intro
My name is Cole Johnston, and I am the founder and editor for Gilded Quill Communications (formerly Gilded Quill Editing). I was born in and I work from Victoria, British Columbia.
While communications management and theory is a significant portion of my profession, it is also a hobby and study interest. I founded this company so that I can expand the scope of my work, do what I enjoy doing, and spread an appreciation for clear and effective English.
Foremost, one must carefully consider a communications plan, which includes projections of public perception, contingency options, group psychology, external events to leverage, timing, and more.
Communication is often a balanced blend of art and logic. It is largely subjective and flexible. Regarding grammar and construction, there is no singular authority that can govern how one must write or speak, and so different styles and conventions arise in different regions and circles. However, regardless of differences, there are still expectations of quality and coherence to reach.
In writing, there is almost always room for improvement. On top of simply lining up your punctuation, capitalization, and general grammar with what is generally considered proper, your message can be made more clear. Your approach and tone can be catered to the setting to improve its reception. Even with pristine content and eloquence, the formatting may have room for improvement; the canvas and frame can make all the difference.
